Inova Health System - Today

Inova Health System is a not-for-profit healthcare organization that provides a comprehensive network of hospitals, healthcare facilities and services throughout Northern Virginia.  It is one of the largest private healthcare delivery systems in Virginia and the Washington, DC metro region.

The Inova system includes hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living communities, emergency and urgent care centers, a home health agency, an outpatient surgical/24 hour emergency care facility, and a variety of health and wellness classes for the community.

Inova Fairfax Hospital, its flagship facility, is an award-winning hospital recognized most often for its outstanding cardiac care.  U.S. News & World Report has named the hospital one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for several years running. In 2009, Inova Fairfax Hospital was recognized by the magazine for three subspecialties (heart and heart surgery, urology, and gynecology). Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children has been recognized as one of the top 25 children’s hospitals in the country by Child Magazine.

In addition, Inova’s quality tradition extends to our 16,100 valued employees as evidenced by numerous awards recognizing workplace excellence. Inova Health System has been named one of the country’s Top 100 Companies for Working Mothers by Working Mother magazine. The award honors organizations that recognize the value and needs of working families, with Inova cited for its benefits, flexible scheduling and child care options.

Inova Health System was among the nation's select few Best Employers for Workers Over
50 according to AARP. AARP praised Inova’s flexible scheduling and tuition assistance program. Inova Health System was also named one of the country’s 100 Most Integrated Healthcare Networks. The recognition comes from Verispan, the nation’s top ratings organization for quality in integrated healthcare networks. Integrated health systems provide a continuum of care that is accessible to the community, eliminating inefficiencies and redundancies to achieve quality care at the lowest possible cost.

Inova Health System has again been named one of the nation’s 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems, according to the results of the 2009 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study. According to the new study, the 100 Most Wired hospitals show better outcomes in patient satisfaction, risk-adjusted mortality rates and other quality measures by using health IT.

Inova is actively involved in the community and has been recognized for a number of local partnerships in which it helps provide healthcare to those less fortunate.  Inova's Partnership for Healthier Kids, for example, is a national model program that reaches out to children without health insurance in Fairfax County Public Schools and links them to a medical home and affordable care. In 2008 alone, Inova Health System provided $204 million in charity care.

In 2007 Inova Health System began taking steps to become a more health conscious and environmentally friendly organization. In November 2007 Inova made all of its campuses tobacco-free, joining more than 400 other hospitals nationwide that have similar policies in place.

And as part of worldwide Earth Day celebrations on April 22, 2008, Inova Health System announced a commitment to “go green” and promote environmentally friendly practices. All Inova hospitals and facilities throughout Northern Virginia formed Going Green Committees to initiate and promote programs that include recycling, using environmentally-friendly cleaning agents and improving waste management systems. Inova also became an ENERGY STAR Partner, a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, that sets standards for superior energy efficiency.
